Kevin Durant‘s latest sneaker is allowing the NBA player to wear his heart on his sleeve and his feet.

When it came time to design a new pair of kicks for Nike, the 25-year-old was inspired by his late Aunt Pearl who sadly passed away from lung cancer in 2000. The Oklahoma City Thunder small forward shared a special bond with his Aunt growing up. As a kid, Durant’s shyness was only nullified by Pearl who would help her nephew out of his shell during the countless hours they spent watching movies, joking, and laughing at his grandma’s house in Capitol Heights, Md., just outside of Washington, D.C. The new KD VI Aunt Pearl shoe helps keep those memories alive.

“I made a promise to myself to always honor my Aunt Pearl,” Durant said in his official press statement, “for the example she set, and the encouragement she gave me to follow my dreams.”

The pale pink and turquoise sneakers feature a floral pattern that mimics a robe Aunt Pearl once wore and is highlighted by subtle pearls. Making the sneaker even more special, the KD VI Aunt Pearl shoe marks Durant’s first ever women’s sneaker and is adorned with a Kay Yow Cancer Fund logo on the tongue. Proceeds from the shoe will go to the Kay Yow Cancer Fund that was founded in 2007 to raise awareness in the battle against women’s cancers.

“Founded by former North Carolina State University head women’s basketball Coach Kay Yow, the Kay Yow Cancer Fund is committed to finding an answer in the fight against women’s cancers through supporting research programs and related projects,” said Nike of the collaboration. “One recent project includes a $100,000 grant awarded to the Tulane Cancer Center, in support of Women’s Lung Cancer research. Coach Yow believed strongly that coaches and athletes share not only a community, but should also share in a cause much larger than any game.”
