Gainesville’s annual 5-kilometer race dubbed “Run Amuck with the Duck” to support lung cancer research has a well-known face behind it this year.
For lovers of the 1980s television sitcom “Laverne and Shirley,” Penny Marshall, cast as Laverne, is a household name. She’s less known as a lung cancer survivor. That’s something Marshall shares with Caren Gorenberg, the founder of the Run Amuck event. Marshall and Gorenberg, who have been friends since childhood in New York City, are featured in a short public service announcement for Saturday’s event: http://vimeo.com/87098842.
The race, held Saturday at 9 a.m. on the grounds of North Florida Regional Medical Center, already has raised $41,073. This is the event’s seventh year, and in total, $200,000 has been raised for the Bonnie J. Addario Lung Cancer Foundation in California.
To register for the race online, go to: http://tinyurl.com/RUNAMUCKWITHTHEDUCK.
You also can register in person on Saturday, starting at 8 a.m.
Online registration costs $25 and $15 for youth and seniors. On-site registration costs $30.
