The Purple Toes campaign, created to support my friend Valerie, and featured on this past December, continues to raise awareness and funding to fight lung cancer. We’ve exceeded our initial goal to raise $10,000 for the Lung Cancer Foundation with over $12,000 to date. We’ve also received a lot of “purple toes” pictures. Each and every one makes Valerie smile.

I’m super excited to announce that the you can see the Purple Toes campaign on NBC Bay Area Proud on Tuesday, June 10 during the 5pm news broadcast. Garvin Thomas is sharing the story of Valerie and her husband, Ralph. The segment provides an intimate look at Valerie’s life since her diagnosis with Stage 4 lung cancer this past August.
You’ll see Valerie getting her bi-weekly drug infusion at the UC Davis Oncology Center, as well as hear firsthand the challenges that she and Ralph have experienced. I even got to join in—Garvin taped us getting a purple . There was a great response from the other guests, including several who donated to the campaign right then!

Valerie and Ralph’s goal is to have her cancer go into remission, as there isn’t a cure for Stage 4 lung cancer at this time. Ralph is already stockpiling lots of fabulous wine to celebrate her NEC (no evidence of cancer) Party!

Since this devastating diagnosis, Valerie has gone through two different treatments (one a trial, the other the “standard” protocol). Neither treatment did anything to stop the tumor growth.
Valerie is now in a new trial with a drug being developed to fight lung cancer. This drug to break down the protective sheath around the cancerous tumors, so the body will recognize them as foreign. If it works, Val’s own immune system will attack and shrink the tumors. To date, 16 weeks into it, the tumors have not grown—but we’re still keeping our purple toes crossed for shrinkage.
Please consider supporting this important campaign. It’s easy to do. Here’s what you can do right now:
