So you want to start your own 501(c)3? Become a BJALCF AFFILIATE instead…
It may be easier to join BJALCF and operate under our 501(c)3. By becoming an affiliate, you can set up a unique fund and raise the much needed funding for Lung Cancer like the Baretta Family in Colorado and “WTF–Where’s the Funding?” have done. For example, BJALCF established the Mary Baretta “Grace” Fund of the Bonnie J. Addario Lung Cancer Foundation as an appropriate fictitious business name of BJALCF, qualifying BJALCF to solicit charitable contributions in Colorado, and establishing appropriate accounts and/or procedures to properly credit contributions to the Fund.  The Agent of your fund can be you or someone you designate to exercise all of your rights under an agreement.  You can hold your own fundraisers and create your own campaigns. BJALCF will take care of all the accounting, paperwork, legal issues and official tax receipts for accepting donations and running a 501(c)3 for you.  The designated Agent of your Fund may recommend the Fund proceeds be applied among one or more existing BJALCF programs, or in favor of one or more qualified charitable organizations which BJALCF supports. Or, there may be a new research project on early detection, for example, that you may recommend, and with Board approval, your funds can be directed toward that project. The affiliate program allows you to become a partner of BJALCF without the headaches of becoming your own 501(c)3, and accelerates the entire movement and mission to eradicate Lung Cancer. In loving Celebration of my Mom.

Mary Baretta "Grace"

To all of those who knew and loved my Mom there is only one word that truly describes the imprint she left on all of our hearts and that is LOVE. She was the true essence of LOVE. My family is blessed to have witness of this enduring love each and every day through Stella, Scarlet, Francesca and Catalina (my nieces and daughters). They are constantly speaking of LaLa, writing her stories and letters, drawing her pictures, missing her, loving her. Even though they were so young when she passed, just a little less than a year ago, her love is so strong they will always embody the spirit and love of Lala and for that we are thankful.

Francesca most recently wanted to know when LaLa would be able to come home from Heaven and in the most innocent yet disappointed voice asked with a sigh, “why does heaven need so many angels?” I may never be able to answer that question but I find some comfort in knowing she will always have the most amazing, beautiful and loving guardian angel looking after her. She knows Lala will alwys be in her heart.

Thank you to all who have provided so much support and comfort to our family and especially to my Dad this year—your thoughts, prayers, support and kindness is loved and appreciated more than we could ever express.

The Mary Baretta “Grace” Fund  is most interested in funding projects that move early detection for Lung Cancer forward.

Jennifer Stauss Windrum's "WTF"

“WTF” (Where’s the Funding) for Lung Cancer?—Omaha, Nebraska

Jennifer Stauss Windrum came up with this phenomenal campaign and joined BJALCF as an affiliate.

Here’s a little story behind the campaign, from Jennifer:

Yeah, you get the double-entrendre. Some may find it a bit crude. I find it necessary to get attention – attention to THE #1 cancer killer in the U.S. and THE most under-funded. Why? Well, the stigma of smoking.

My mom, Leslie Lehrman, has never smoked. She has stage IV Lung Cancer – inoperable, incurable. Yes, that’s right, you DO NOT have to smoke to get Lung Cancer. Many people do NOT know this. And more and more people who have never smoked are being diagnosed and dying of Lung Cancer.

I will not let my mom die without having told her story and without making a difference. Here is her story.

Jennifer and Leslie at the Bonnie J. Addario Simply the Best Dinner Gala IV

It’s time to take the stigma OUT of Lung Cancer – smokers or not – and get Lung Cancer the attention and funding it deserves.

Until then, I will continue to loudly scream, “WTF” for Lung Cancer?” Join me.
